First day on the trail was eventful. Mike's GPS said it was 8.3 miles. It first followed the bay for a mile or so then it climbed to a ridge. The top was similar to being on the Greenstone Ridge with the nice vistas. We took a break at the top and talked with a couple from the Twin Cities that were heading back to the mainland on the Wenonah in the afternoon. After the break we headed down the ridge and low and behold we saw a big bull moose, up close and personal. I was in front and saw him scratching his antlers on some trees. Right on our path. We held up while he moved 10 or 15 yards up a hill behind a bush. This allowed us enough room to pass and we did so quickly and carefully. We hiked about 6 hours and took one of the group sites at Feldtmann Lake. This lake is beautiful. Camille (my wife) sewed me a chair support for my ThermoRest. It was real nice to sit around camp in luxury. In fact, I'm sitting in it as I write. Tonight we are having freeze-dried beef stroganoff. This is the only meal that is from a sporting goods store instead of a grocery store. It was ok…. I did like the freeze-dried applesauce.

I had a couple of equipment problems today. First, one of the shoulder straps to my Kelty ripped from the pack. I stopped and sewed it up with dental floss. It seemed to work okay, mainly because I put almost all of my weight on the hip belt. My second problem was that my large Platypus bladder leaked and much of my pack was wet. I had several other smaller bladders so I was ok.
