Feldtmann Lake with Lake Superior |
By Wayne Culp Three years ago Mike McLaughlin and I made our first trip to Isle Royale (see http://www.tconl.com/~cculp/Isle_Royale/). Backpacking at Isle Royale is a captivating experience and this is our return trip. We invited Lyle Williamson on the current trip and our experience was everything we remembered from the first, plus more. |

Grand Portage Isle Royale Transportation: |
Mike, Lyle, and I left Omaha at 6AM. Lyle drove in his Suburban and the early start gave us the opportunity to stop and have lunch with Kelsie. She is Lyle's younger daughter and is a s sophomore at Hamlin University in St. Paul. His Suburban made for a comfortable ride and Lyle insisted on driving the whole way. I had reserved a cabin at Timberlunds in Grand Marais and we were there before 6PM. Lyle suggested pizza at Sven & Ole's and we stopped next door at Alyce's for an ice cream cone afterward. These are well known establishments in downtown Grand Marais and they lived up to their reputation. After soaking in a little ambiance of Lake Superior we headed back to our cabin and began the gear run-through and as usual we set aside quite a bit. This made for much lighter packs. It was warm and didn't cool off much that night, but I slept well. However, Mike and Lyle found it hard to sleep. |
