Backpacking Isle Royale 2008

Backpacking Isle Royale 2008 (click to view the Photo Gallery)

In September Wayne and Andrew and a neighbor down the street spent 10 days on Isle Royale N.P.  This is an island and national park in Lake Superior with great backpacking trails.  Wayne has hiked this island 5 times in the last 9 years.  In 2007 Wayne went with Charles (see Charles’ web site) and now he has taken both sons on trips across the island.  We’re sure there will be future hiking trips and Wayne is looking hard at “backpacking light“.

Below are some pictures from my backpacking trip to Isle Royale in September 2008.  Neighbor and friend Mike and I drove to Minneapolis, picked up my son Andrew, and drove to Grand Marais.  The next morning we boarded Voyager II and started hiking at Rock Harbor on the east end of Isle Royale.  We hiked and camped at Three Mile, Moskey Basin, West Chickenbone, Hatchet, Desor, Windigo, and Huginnin Cove.  Due to high seas on Lake Superior, the Voyager left early on day eight and we got to stay two more nights.  A pleasent surprise for a newly retired guy like me.  Andrew however, spent two days in the Windigo Visitor Center, writing the syllabus and preparing for the class he will to teach at Ohio State University when he gets back.  In all we spent a good amount of time on the Greenstone Ridge trail with it’s beautiful panoramic views of Canada, Michigan, and maybe even Wisconsin.  On leaving the island, we had onion rings and sandwiches at My Sister’s Place in Grand Marais and drove to Chicago to drop Andrew off at his girl friend, Samantha’s place.  Mike and I returned to Omaha and Andrew took Mega Bus back to OSU.

U.S. Tennis Assoc – Midwest Seniors Sectional

 by Wayne

USTA Tennis Sectional Tournament in Oklahoma City in August 2008

Wayne’s senior tennis team represented Nebraska at the sectional tournament for USTA in August.  Interestingly all 5 teams (IA, MO, KS, OK, & NE) ended up with a 2 win-2 loss record in the round robin. Our Nebraska team had a slow start losing to Kansas and Oklahoma.  Then on late Saturday afternoon, we took on Iowa and won 3 to 0 then beat the Missouri team on Sunday morning.  The Iowa matchup was particularly satisfying since they were the team that advanced to regionals following the tie-breaker scoring.  Wayne teamed up with Jake, the team captain, and after losing the first set in a tie-breaker, we won the second set and the thrid set which was a 10 point tie-breaker.  It was great fun and competition.  Check out the photo gallery.

Pine Ridge Mission Trip

by Wayne

Wayne went with the youth from St Andrew’s Episcopal Church on a mission trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota in July, 2008.  Here is the handicap assessable ramp we built at St. Michael’s Church in Batesland.

Check out this link or the picture below to see the picture gallery.

The St. Andrew’s Youth had a vacation bible school with the Native American kids at the Episcopal church near Kyle, SD each day.

Culp/Shook//Floyd Family Reunion

Family Reunion – 2008 in Black Hills

Every other year the Culp/Shook clan gathers for a family reunion.  This summer we stayed in the Black Hills at Spokane Creek Resort.  It is always a great time to gather with cousins … Uncle John was the only uncle this year and our offspring seemed too busy to attend or being kids.  We agreed with Uncle John that we would do better in 2010 … in New Mexico.  The reunion this year was just two days after Wayne retired!  A highlight for Camille, Wanda, and Wayne was hiking Harney Peak … checkout the photo gallery.

Wayne retired from Qwest (USWest/Mtn Bell) on July 2, 2008.  In his 31+ year career Wayne worked in engineering, public policy, and finance and we lived in Helena, Billings, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, and Omaha.  Now Wayne is trying to figure out what he’ll do since he has grown up.  Tennis, playing his bass, and backpacking are part … the rest is still to be determined.  Stay tuned.
